Manchester City Announce £1 Billion Player's Investment

First Street in Manchester

Big players have seen their proposals for a total of £1 billion worth of building, including 1000 new homes, in Manchester passed by the Council’s planning committee on 24 September.

The schemes have been proposed by the likes of the Far East Consortium (for a triple tower residential scheme), Oak View Group (for Manchester Arena 2), Downing (for a 2000 room co-living space), Vita (also for 2,000 room co-living tower) and Engie and Landcare for 410 homes redevelopment.

Major schemes including a second arena, in East Manchester, 634 new homes as part of the Northern Gateway scheme on the northern edge of the city centre and 410 new homes in Varley Street in Miles Platting all got the OK.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, believes the schemes taken together will generate thousands of new jobs - both permanent and construction and supply chain jobs - and provide much-needed new housing in the city, including affordable homes.

“The fact that these schemes are being brought forward represents a remarkable statement of confidence in Manchester at a time of major national economic uncertainty. That is important not just as a reassurance but as something which would translate into real jobs, real homes and real opportunities for Manchester people.”

Apprenticeships

It is estimated that in total the schemes will directly create or support more than 1,300 permanent jobs, more than 200 apprenticeships and thousands more construction industry and supply chain roles. Local labour agreements would ensure that many of these roles are specifically targeted at Manchester residents.
