How Do You Flu?

Construction and manufacturing could take a hit this winter with staff sickness as Covid continues less virulently but with flu on the rise. What can you do to avoid disruption?

The construction industry’s output has plummeted over the past few months. In March, work was down by 7.1% compared to last year. Nifty Lift – one of the largest manufacturers of mobile elevating work platforms in the UK – is recommending a number of precautions to reduse the problem.

Machinery checks

It is essential that firms run through all the necessary machinery checks and closely examine any equipment on a regular basis but more so if it hasn’t been used in a while.

Social distancing measures

Covid is still around and flu cases are expected to reach a high point this winter as people’s immune systems are still getting back to work after a lack of exposure during the pandemic. Social distancing can be difficult on a construction site where everyone expects to be back to normal but there are plenty of organisations recommending operators exercise a degree of precaution – cleaning, disinfecting and providing hand washing facilities are all good ideas, along with asking workers not to come in if they are showing symptoms.

In a recent webinar hosted by RICS, several key steps were discussed, which could be made a part of such a plan: Stagger your employees’ starting times to avoid a rush at a particular time of day; make hand sanitisers readily available; appoint a social distance coordinator.

Communication

Workers still need to be updated with the latest guidance on Covid-19 and how to stay safe. This can be done through regular briefings, toolbox talks, posters and signage.
