Patio Performance

If you are seeking to maximise the amount of light transmission, then a patio door is the best possible solution for an uninterrupted view of the world outside, writes Kömmerling’s Kevin Warner – but you do want it to be ‘Technically Better’.

We’re in an era where it’s all about light and space whether you are an architect, involved in the trade or a discerning consumer looking to open-up your home for a better way of life.

We have enjoyed the development of technically better patio doors in recent years as consumers have migrated from French or double doors to a more simple and practical solution. Without question our Kömmerling PremiLine Pro patio door is amongst the leading products on the market, while we also have the highly impressive hybrid Warmcore solution and a lift and slide PremiDoor 76 for larger and more prestigious applications. Better still we also have our PremiDoor 88 for Passivhaus too.

Technically better PVC-U patio doors

There are a number of technical enhancements to the PremiLine Pro to make it a standout performer for a PVC-U patio door with a patented multipoint locking mechanism at the interlock, which is operated by a stylish pop-out handle. It has already achieved PAS24 in 2, 3 and 4 pane variants. It is now available with a dedicated triple-track option for further design choice and this variant of our patio door also satisfies the requirements for the Lifetime Homes standard too.

Option

There are a wide range of colours and finishes including three different shades of grey and an additional and a proSmooth anthracite grey finish.

Upgraded rollers now operate to a 220kg loading for larger openings and for triple-glazed applications, soft-close technology reduces the risk of trapping fingers and damage to the door.

Aluminium but warmer

Warmcore patio door is a good choice for homeowners wishing to combine the energy efficiency and sound reduction credentials of PVC-U with the architectural appeal of aluminium. It’s available in 2, 3 and 4 pane variants with the option of both single colour or dual-colour options and a thermally broken low threshold as part of the system.

There is a custom designed premium ‘lift-to-lock’ handle which is unique to the Warmcore patio door. This handle operates the bi-directional locks located at the top and bottom of the door and feature ‘claws’ helping to make Warmcore patios incredibly secure at the interlock, typically a security weak point in standard PVC-U patio doors. The Warmcore patio door also achieves PAS24.

Rollers

Other bespoke hardware features throughout the Warmcore patio door include self-levelling rollers running on a precision engineered track which have been tested to 50,000 cycles, providing further proof of longevity, along with the option of soft-close technology.

Architectural appeal of lift & slide

As a flagship patio door, the lift and slide PremiDoor 76 is capable of spanning 6.5m wide and 2.6m high with just two sashes and capable of carrying 400kg per sash. The increase in available light is also enhanced further with the fixed Lux variant with finishing options extending to colours, foiled finishes, an AluClip exterior, along with the pioneering proCoverTec surface finish.

The lift and slide PremiDoor can accommodate 2, 3 and 4 pane options and is designed to accommodate glazing from 28-48mm. A dedicated engineered cill also offers rigidity and thermal performance and can also be flush mounted.

Ready for triple

All of our patio door solutions can accommodate triple glazing as standard, and the PremiLine Pro achieves a U-value of 1.2 W/(m2K) with a 32mm unit compared to the benchmark of 1.3 W/(m2K) with a standard 28mm unit. Better still, Warmcore offers U-value of 1.4 W/(m2K) double glazed and 1.0 W/(m2K) triple glazed with a 48mm unit, while the lift and slide PremiDoor 76 can achieve Passivhaus levels of performance of 0.76 W/(m2K).

Being Technically Better underpins everything we do given the product performance credentials that we offer for today and tomorrow’s more stringent markets. When it comes to patio doors too, we have few peers in the sector given the choice and next generation product features that make us a stand-out brand when it comes to product design.
