The Kärben Composite

Apeer’s Asa McGillian introduces the Kärben Hybrid Aluminium Entrance Door Collection – a high-performance entrance door that features carbon fibre technology which he thinks will be a game changer for installers operating in the high-end market.

As we head into 2024, we know that the challenging market conditions that have faced installers post-pandemic are likely to remain well into the new year.

Yet as ever, there are still plenty of opportunities to be had, especially for those who have partnered with suppliers that have invested in new and exciting products and even more so if those products have been designed to appeal to a more affluent customer base that’s still prepared to spend on high quality home improvements.

At Apeer, for example, we invest massively in ongoing new product development to keep our customers ahead of the game, and we never rest on our laurels – we’re constantly looking at new ideas to feed into our R&D department.

Within the last 12 months, for example, that’s resulted in the high-profile launch of The Residence Collection by Apeer – which drew crowds at the 2023 FIT Show thanks to the collaboration between two of the industry’s most respected brands, as well as for headline U-values from as low as 0.51 W/m2k.

Kärben

And now, we are proud to unveil yet another market leading offer.

The new Kärben Hybrid Aluminium Entrance Door Collection is an outstanding proposition for installers because not only does it build on the popularity of our aluminium inspired, smooth Silka finish, it is also incredibly strong and highly energy efficient, with U-values from as low as 1.1 W/m2k.

Carbon fibre reinforcing

A key element to this winning combination of contemporary aesthetics and class leading performance is the introduction of carbon fibre reinforcing in the structure of the door slab.

For those that enjoy following Formula 1 or yacht racing, then carbon fibre will be a familiar material. Ultra-lightweight and incredibly strong in comparison to other materials such as steel, it’s become a vital engineering component in these glamorous sports.

F1 is, of course, a world away from composites, however, when we were exploring new ways to eliminate deformation and warping, we realised we could utilise the same high strength to weight ratio of carbon fibre in our products.

Great selling points

It’s a great selling point. For homeowners, there’s a clear association with a high-performance material but for installers, there’s the guarantee that they can ‘fit and forget’ without the risk of remedial work that costs them time, money and reputational damage.

To further enhance the strength of the Silka Aluminium Kärben Door Collection, we’ve also specified the best hardware, with four Mila Pro Secure hinges per door and a GU automatic lock. As a result, homeowners can rest assured that the range meets the requirements of PAS24 and Secured by Design accreditations.

Thermal efficiency

To achieve impressive U-values, the doors are constructed around our Thermafill high-density insulating core, a super strong pultruded GRP sub-frame and high strength, seven layered, interwoven fibreglass skins.

That’s in addition to a double rebate flush fit system and an 80mm flush aluminium frame.

Styles

We’ve also worked hard to develop a comprehensive collection of 16 door styles and a wide range of colours.

These include ultra-contemporary finishes such as True Black or Anthracite Grey – which deliver a premium aesthetic that’s perhaps more commonly associated with aluminium entrance doors – as well as options for our distinctive and bespoke line designs and one way glass.

The decorative glass units are triple or quadruple glazed as standard, depending on door style, with 60mm, 65mm and 68mm formats, as well as triple glazing on full sidelights as standard.

Keep innovating

We’ve developed what we believe is one of the most compelling entrance door portfolios on the market, along with our popular 44mm, 70mm and The Residence Collection doors, we have solutions that can win sales at all price points.

Yet if there’s one thing we’ve learnt from our vast experience in producing composite doors, it’s that in order to stay ahead in what has become a mature and competitive sector, it’s vital to constantly innovate and introduce fresh ideas.

By raising the bar once again with the introduction of the Kärben Hybrid Aluminium Entrance Door Collection, installers can make the most of ongoing demand at the top end of the market with a product that delivers a compelling combination of strength, energy efficiency and contemporary style.
