Sun Shines On Notts - Solar Transplants For Company That Died Twice

Carl Lewis MD, Solar Windows.

A company that has gone bust twice in a matter of years and left hundreds of employees out of work has been saved as the directors of Solar Windows have taken bits of Nottingham's Aperture Trading.

Solar Windows has set up Solar Calibre Ltd and Solar Norvik Ltd as associated businesses in order to re-establish the jobs and buy manufacturing assets.

The assets have been bought from the Profine Group which had bought a substantial part of Aperture from the administrator - KPMG.

Aperture was the company set up to by Synseal when it went bust.

21 May had seen KPMG announce that the remaining business and assets of Aperture Trading (a window and door business), had been acquired by the Profine Group - a global PVC profile systems supplier. This included the remaining extrusion and fabrications assets to and the transfer of brands including Warmcore, Legend, Synerjy, Shield, Sheerframe, Evolve, Calibre doors and Norvik New Build.

This was after the previous sale of the Global (conservatory roofs) and Stratus (rooflights) products to Ultraframe.

Sharing resources

A statement from Profine reads: 'This enables Profine Group to focus on the extrusion of window and door systems, while the newly formed businesses under the Solar name will use the directors' considerable experience in manufacture of windows and doors for the commercial sector  - with some sales to the trade'.

Both Solar Calibre Ltd and Solar Norvik Ltd will operate from the Huthwaite site that will be shared with Profine UK and Celsius Glass.

The statement continues: 'This will be a major boost for the local labour market which has been impacted by the redundancy of several hundred former workers at the site. It will also help expand the reach of Solar Windows from Caerphilly, Wales into the Midlands in England'.

“This is a significant opportunity for us to spread our reach into the middle of the UK and to expand our operations into the new build sector under the Norvik brand.”

Fire doors

"We’ve already got significant experience in the fire door sector and so the Warden Fire Door brand (which was also part of the acquisition) will help us accelerate our growth in this sector," continues Lewis who also becomes MD of the two new business. "The Craftsmen and GRP doors (again part of the acquisition) will support our move into selected segments of the trade market."

Lewis adds: "We’ve got a partnership agreement in place with Profine that will realise benefits for both parties and the Solar team."

Kömmerling

Profine's Kömmerling brand has been increasing market share in the UK, most notably in the last 18 months and so the Group has been looking at various options in terms of opening a dedicated manufacturing facility. This has now been realised through a dedicated business now known as Profine UK Extrusions Ltd (www.profine-uk.com), boasting more than 20 extrusion lines, a mixing plant and several foiling and injection moulding systems.

The newly acquired brands and products from the Aperture business will also be considered for other export markets, given the fact that the Profine Group supplies products to more than 100 countries, with over 3,500 employees operating from offices across the globe.

Gareth Jones, MD of Profine UK said: "This is wonderful news for all parties concerned and provides us with an integrated mixing, extrusion and lamination facility in the UK. It’s been something we’ve been looking at for several years and now we can continue to build market share for the Kömmerling brand and support it with others such as WarmCore and Evolve, which will also benefit from investment."

Dr. Peter Mrosik, CEO and owner of Profine Group added: "With this acquisition, we are strengthening our strong international market position and continuing our success story in the UK market. We are thus underlining our goal of being the leading company in our industry for each of our markets."
