Severe Injuries Kill Everton Fan Michael Jones At Club’s New Home

A construction worker who was killed in an incident at the Everton Stadium has been named as 26 year old Michael Jones. He was a devoted Blues fan who is said to have been chuffed to be working on the club’s new home.

The site is at Bramley Moore Dock in Liverpool. The incident has been reported as a devastating blow to the head. It occurred on Monday 14 August.

A post-mortem to establish the cause of death was due to take place on Wednesday 16 August.

The Merseyside police force has been working jointly with the Health & Safety Executive. Enquiries were still ongoing on 16 August.

A statement from Jones’ family who hail from nearby Kirkby, said: “The family would like to thank everyone for their support. It is with our greatest sadness that our beloved son, brother uncle and friend Michael has sadly passed away. He was a lifelong Blue who was so happy to working on the new stadium. We want to thank the NHS staff and work colleagues who did their best for Michael. He will be missed beyond words.”

10 August marked two years since Laing O’Rourke started construction of the stadium.

A Laing O’Rourke statement, issued on 17 August, reads: ‘On Monday 14 August, a member of our team who was carrying out work for one of our sub-contractors was seriously injured in an incident. He was taken to hospital via ambulance, where he sadly died.

’His name was Michael Jones. He was 26 years old and a lifelong Everton fan.

‘We will do all that we can to support his family and our wider project team at Everton who are all shocked and deeply saddened by Monday’s tragic incident.’

 

Tribute

Gareth Jacques, the project director at Everton Stadium said: “We are in contact with Michael’s family and at the appropriate time we will discuss with them and Everton how best to pay tribute to the contribution Michael made to Everton Stadium.

”We will continue to cooperate with the HSE and plan to resume work on site next week, when we will bring our people together to hold a minute’s silence in memory of Michael.”

Everton Football Club made a statement via Twitter (X) which reads: ‘The loss of Michael Jones, a lifelong Evertonian who followed the Blues home and away, has left us all devastated. The thoughts of everyone at Everton remain with Michael's family, friends and colleagues. 

’We will now be working with Michael's family on an appropriate and lasting tribute’.
