Heaven Sent Vent

A Sheerline roof lantern SheerVent

SheerVent was ‘heaven sent’ to provide a practical, stylish solution that integrated with the Sheerline S1 roof lantern and S2 conservatory roofs as well, writes the company’s Jon Crohill who explains the development process and the importance of ventilation.

No stranger to shaking up the aluminium industry, Sheerline has gained a reputation for solutions that tackle long-standing problems within the fenestration industry.

And SheerVent is no different.

The intelligent ventilation system was developed from scratch by Sheerline’s in-house R&D team in a bid to bring roof lantern ventilation into the 21st century. It was specifically engineered to provide a practical, stylish solution that integrated perfectly with the Sheerline S1 roof lantern.

Conservatories too

Since being unveiled at the FIT Show in 2023, SheerVent has become a key product within the Sheerline range, not only adding a new dimension to the S1 but also now available for S2 conservatory roofs.

Sheerline’s Jon Crohill says: “Many in the industry will appreciate that old roof lantern and conservatory ventilation systems have a tendency to be leaky.

“Not only does the S2 system ensure conservatories stays dry during wet weather, it also means those unbearably stuffy and humid conservatories can become usable spaces during summer months.”

Replacing the chunky

Crohill adds: “When you think of roof lantern ventilation  before SheerVent, the only options available were chunky, they often sat proud of the lantern frame and generally, they leaked – perhaps not straight away but over time. In essence, every element of the design was a flawed compromise.

“When designing SheerVent, every element was carefully considered, ensuring these problems were addressed. For example, it sits flush with S1’s low-line rafter bars; it offers the same sleek style as the rest of Sheerline’s products and it can be exactly matched in colour.

“The clever design also means there is no requirement for muntin bars, offering reliable leak-free installations. And with the UK’s weather becoming increasingly unpredictable and extreme and our winters becoming wetter, reliability is key.”

Ventilation is growing in importance

There are so many benefits to adding reliable ventilation to a roof system. With homes becoming increasingly energy efficient and therefore airtight, there is a real need to add ventilation to allow warm air to escape to prevent overheating during the hot summer months.

With SheerVent, customers can opt for automatic powered actuators to be fitted. They can be paired with a range of discreet sensors that monitor for rain, wind and light.

SheerVent can be fitted retrospectively to S1 installations, including the automated version.

Easy, breezy

Crowhill says: “One of the key reasons for SheerVent’s (and the S1’s) success is because the products have been purposely designed to offer practical features without compromising on style.

“Ventilation will continue to become a hot topic for homeowners, developers and installers alike. As well as flooding their homes with natural light, people like to choose natural cooling systems that don’t cost the earth – literally!

“Customers will continue to choose S1 and S2 roofs with SheerVent because of the ease of installation, the simplicity of the products and the fact they just work. Innovation, reliability, sustainability…these are all features Sheerline offers – and the range looks good too.”

SheerVent is described by its inventors, Garnalex, as a game changing, intelligent ventilation system for Sheerline lanterns and conservatories.
