Energy Saving Window Coating Wins Cash Award

An ingenious new window coating which can reduce a home’s energy use by 20% has just secured funding from Ignite with Ebico.

Ignite with Ebico was launched in August 2022 by the Ebico Trust and Sustainable Ventures. It is a scheme to support the most promising innovations in affordable heating. It backs innovators with funding between £5,000 and £10,000, helping them get from the drawing board to market.

Window Insulation

Window Insulation Ltd is one of the latest innovators to have secured the scheme’s Innovation Support Award, following the latest round of judging in December 2022. Window Insulation’s Low-E retrofit coating for windows reduces the amount of heat lost through glass by 40% in the winter. At the same time, it reduces condensation by 50%.

The clever coating is useful in summer too as it reflects-away almost all harmful UV radiation whilst reducing overheat, caused by infra-red radiation, by 40%.

Return on investment

In a typical year it is claimed that it reduces a home’s heating energy use by 20%. With the amount of coating needed for a typical semi-detached home costing about £1,500 and energy costs soaring, the cost of applying Low-E to a house could potentially be recouped quickly.

Support

Through the Ignite with Ebico scheme Window Insulation has won a package to help with the branding and commercial exploitation of Low-E.

“The aim of Ignite with Ebico is to get more affordable cleantech solutions onto the market as soon as possible. Low-E is exactly the sort of product we’re keen to support.”

–Phil Levermore

CEO, Ebico

Driving forward

"The coating offers significant, measurable benefits,” adds Levermore. “And with the right support could quickly and easily start making a real difference to the energy consumption in low-income households. We’re thrilled to be helping the team at Window Insulation drive the product forward in the UK.”

Apply

Ignite with Ebico has quarterly judging rounds. Individuals, teams and start-up companies, can apply as part of Round 3 until Friday 10 March 2023.

If successful they could win support in one or more of the following key areas – product viability, commercial potential and exploitation, investment readiness, technical scoping and feasibility assessment, logo and brand identity and new product/service development.

Grants totalling up to £100,000 will be awarded over the year.
