Façade Engineering Awards Shortlist

The last personal project of architect Dame Zaha Hadid (Bee’ah Headquarters in UAE) and London’s Battersea Power Station and Elizabeth Tower have been shortlisted for the Façade 2023 Design and Engineering Awards.

The Society of Façade Engineering (SFE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) have compiled this shortlist. This year, 28 projects, 13 young engineers and seven products have been recognised.

Shortlists for the four international project categories – refurbishment, new build, innovation and sustainability – saw entries from seven countries and three continents, showcasing the impressive global expertise within façade engineering.

Standout international nominations include the Bee’ah Headquarters, located in Sharjah's Al Sajaa desert in the UAE and the Google Bay View Campus in California, USA, which boasts 90,000 dragonscale solar shingles, contributing to 40% of the buildings' annual energy needs.

In the UK project categories, the Battersea Power Station refurbishment is among the 13 shortlisted entries. One of the largest urban regeneration projects in the UK, the renovation of the façades involved the installation of 13,500sq.m of heritage glazing and the replacement of over 1.5 million bricks.

Challenges

Chris Macey, chair of Judges says: “The diversity of the shortlisted projects demonstrates the range of skills and expertise present within the discipline of façade engineering and are a testament to what can be achieved with many of the current challenges including carbon savings, climate, energy performance and repurposing existing buildings.

“Equally, the young engineers making the list demonstrate we have the growing competence and skills for the future, assisted in no small part by the innovations of the shortlisted products.”

Reynaers

The awards, sponsored by Reynaers, take place on 8 November 2023 at the Hilton Park Lane, London. It will once again be co-located with the Zak World of Facades London conference.
